Bert van den Brink Invites Paul van der Feen & Jasper Somsen is the second album by this exceptional trio, recorded in September 2025 in the Netherlands.
Their first release was captured live during the Dutch bassist’s concert series Jasper Somsen Invites… in his hometown of Wageningen (NL). The recording was entirely spontaneous and reflected the trio’s natural musical chemistry. For this second album, the musicians chose a different approach, placing pianist and composer Bert van den Brink in the artistic lead.
The result is a remarkably fresh and intimate recording that differs from its predecessor both artistically and technically. The repertoire brings together original compositions by all three musicians alongside a carefully selected collection of jazz standards. Unlike the first album, Bert van den Brink performs on a magnificent Steinway concert grand piano, while Paul van der Feen is featured on clarinet in a deeply moving interpretation of Ariel Ramírez’s timeless Alfonsina y el Mar.
The album was recorded in the historic MCO Studio 2 in Hilversum, a former radio studio dating back to 1932. Staying true to the philosophy of capturing music in its most natural form, the entire recording was made using a single stereo microphone—a Josephson C700S. This minimalist recording technique preserves the authentic acoustic perspective of a listener seated in the front rows of a concert hall, creating an extraordinary sense of presence, depth, and musical intimacy.
